Window shopping is, for the large part, an unexplored art in our materialistic society. The purpose of window shopping is not to spend money or acquire new clothes, but to learn more about oneself and ones personal tastes.

  1. Think about the purpose of your trip. Are you scouting new fashion trends? Are you making a mental shopping list, planning on returning later to make purchases? Or are you simply looking for a good way to spend a few hours?
  2. Choose your location.

    The ideal location for window shopping is a mall(indoor or outdoor) with a variety of different stores. When you are out and about, look for places with impressive window displays.

  3. Prepare the night before. Pack your purse and set out your outfit. You won’t need much money (you’re not buying anything, remember?), but you probably want to bring some for lunch or just in case. Bring whatever else you would normally take on a shopping trip, but leave the credit cards at home in case you get too tempted.
  4. Get a good night’s sleep and eat breakfast.
  5. Dress comfortably and casually. Make sure you wear comfy shoes, as you will be doing a lot of walking.
  6. Arrive to your location early. Start at one end and gradually work your way over to the other. Walk slowly, taking in the sights. There’s no need to rush. This is a great opportunity to people watch.
  7. Stop and carefully observe the first window display that you see. Do you like the clothes on display? Could you see yourself in those outfits? Take notes or mark down the store name, if necessary, but do not go into the store.
  8. Continue on, viewing other displays at your discretion. Try to identify trends and patterns in the displays.
